Wearing Corsets

One type of lingerie that has been around for hundreds of years is the corset. The first types of corsets were made in the fifteen hundreds or in the early sixteenth century. At first, it was a simple bodice that was stiffened by whalebone. In the eighteenth century, more whalebone was being used. During the eighteenth century, the corsets were used to emphasize the bust of the women and draw the shoulders back. In the nineteenth century, there were men who would wear these corsets. The men said that they needed these corsets to cure their back pains. During the twentieth century, corsets took on the form that you would normally see today. This is the long corset that starts from the bottom of the arms and extends all the way down to the hips.

Where did the corset go? How come you don’t see as many corsets being worn today like they were worn before? From the 1920’s onward, these corsets started being replaced by the modern day bras or brassieres. The corset lost its functionality when the bras were introduced into the market during these times. The bra was handier, compact, and performed most of the essential functions of the corset.

In the mid nineteen hundreds, 1940’s to 1950’s, there was a brief revival of the corset. The corsets used in these times were mainly to promote the hourglass figure. After this brief revival, the use of the corset died down again. The corset was revived once more in the 1980’s as a form of haute culture. Again, this was only for a brief period of time.

Corsets nowadays are more of a fashion accessory than a functional one. Corset lingerie is considered as a fetish accessory. It has that gothic effect during the playful stages of coupling. People use corsets to entertain rather than to support the body nowadays. Several films in the new millennium show the use of the corset. In one way or another, it has promoted awareness of the corset and its use as a fashion accessory. Films like Van Helsing show Kate Beckinsale wearing a corset as part of her costume. In the film Pirates of the Caribbean, Keira Knightley wears a tight corset and acts as if she is getting suffocated by it most of the time. The corset has a rich history and it would be great to wear corset lingerie once in awhile. For those who want to be a little cultured and playful, wearing corset lingerie may be one of the best ideas around.
